What is Textile Recycling?

In 2023, out of 211 thousand tonnes of textile, fabric, clothes and leather wastes generated, only 2% (5 thousand tonnes) were recycled.

Textile recycling involves recovering old clothing and fabrics for reuse or material recovery. This process is essential for reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing environmental impact.

With the rise of fast-fashion trends in the recent years, fast-fashion outlets are changing trends quicker than ever before, so as to generate more sales. The results, clothes that are not made to last and clothes that are going out of style sooner, leading to more clothes ending up in the bins. Often, these old clothes are exported overseas as second-hand clothing.
